      I had the pleasure of teaching at Linda Vista Elementary Magnet School as a first and second grade combo teacher. Teaching at this Title I school gave me the opportunity to expand my best teaching practices. Linda Vista is currently in progress to become an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program school. IB has given me the tools to make a curriculum rigorous and meaningful through grade level curriculum development and intentional lesson planning. Weekly collaboration with my first and second grade teams was pivotal to a successful school year. We worked together to thoroughly align our designed content, the Common Core standards, and the Next Generation science standards in a meaningful, transdisciplinary curriculum. This in-depth curriculum development allowed my team and I to meet the diverse needs of our student population. Furthermore, meeting the needs of all students is a team effort in my classroom. The special education teacher and I successfully implemented best teaching practices to create a classroom with the least restricted environment for fully mainstreamed students with special needs. While collaborating diligently with the special education teacher, we used co-teaching strategies to create a fully inclusive teaching model that provides ALL students access to the core content. A mainstreamed classroom provides students opportunities to work more cohesively and cultivate 21st century skills, while developing their social and emotional skills. Show less
