Graduate Research Assistant

As a graduate research assistant I was involved with several projects covering a wide range of topics. All topics were new to me and required extensive research and literature reviews. The major projects I worked on involved determining the effects of environmental contaminants on avian wildlife, specifically organophosphate pesticides and heavy metals. Research Projects: •Factors influencing the bioavailability of silver nanoparticles in a terrestrial system - For my dissertation research, performed a series of experiments looking at various soil properties and characteristics of nanoparticles to determine which had the largest impact on bioavailability in a terrestrial food web •Blood biomarkers of organophosphate pesticide exposure in avian wildlife - Measured acetylcholine levels extracted from dried blood spots from wild caught Northern Bobwhites in an effort to determine pesticide exposure •Detection of heavy metals in wild-caught avian tissue - Analyzed liver, kidney, and breast tissue samples from wild caught Northern Bobwhites for concentrations of Hg and Pb Show less
