BSc Thesis: Imaging and Analysis of Porous Silicon and Its Use as an Infrared Filter
-
Sep 2021 - May 2022
I used interferometry and SEM image analysis to determine relationships between optical and topological properties of porous silicon. I performed transmission measurements on samples of porous silicon of orientation (100) and (111) using Bomem Model MB102. I then imaged surface each porous silicon sample using Hitachi SU5000 Schottky Field-Emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). Topological features of porous silicon samples were assessed, namely, nearest neighbour distance, pore number density, percent pore coverage, pore radii and wall thickness, using NIH particle analysis software, ImageJ. I determined that strong correlations existed between cut-off wavenumber (defined as 5% of optical transmission) and pore radii, as well as close relationships with nearest neighbour distance and wall thickness. This project included a proposal, midterm and final presentations to faculty and public, as well as a written thesis submission. Show less

In collaboration with another student, I determined that a novel two-soliton solution existed for the KdV-1 flow equation using Hirota's method, expressing KdV-1 flow equation in bilinear form and invoking logarithmic ansatz.

Match of Minds Internal Award Recipient
-
May 2020 - Sep 2020
I was awarded $5,000 “Match of Minds” internal scholarship to de-bug code in graphing program, Physica, in order to update older versions of the software and to be able to export it to different operating systems. Weekly meetings were held with supervisor to discuss solutions to issues in the software and determine priority of tasks. I worked at a gift shop for the Niagara Parks Commission, a provincial government organization which funds conservation efforts along the Niagara parkway. I interacted with customers from around the globe and greatly improved my people skills. I coded questions in mechanics into online homework resource WebWork to be used as test and assignment questions for students in first year physics courses at Brock University. I also wrote hints for students and tested each question to ensure there were no errors in code.
