Credentialing and Privileging is a quality assurance and risk management safeguard used to ensure high quality members to the Fraser Health medical staff. The process includes a thorough evaluation of a practitioner’s qualifications and competence against specialty-specific standards in order to provide appropriate and safe care to patients. I have managed Medical Affairs business processes within three diverse portfolios: Department of Surgery (415 members), Department of Nurse Practitioners (100 members), and physician renewals (2500 members). The Infection Prevention & Control Service (IPCS) ensures a safe environment for patients throughout PHSA and its agencies. IPCS collaborates with regional health authorities, the Provincial Infection Control Network of BC and Public Health to promote standardization of guidelines and surveillance scope. My role at IPCS involved health promotion and education related to infection control for patients, visitors, and staff. I coordinated routine audits across PHSA facilities, including BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Forensic Psychiatric Hospital, BC Cancer Agency, and BC Centre for Disease Control. After analysis, I facilitated workshops and presented education sessions for both clinical staff and patients to teach the basics of infection control and to promote proper hand hygiene practices. A physician, midwife, dentist or nurse practitioner must have an appointment to the Fraser Health Medical Staff prior to practicing in a Fraser Health hospital. In order to become a member of the FH Medical Staff a practitioner must formally apply to the Board of Directors and submit a prescribed list of credentials. My role involved assisting Medical Affairs with functions related to credentialing and recruitment.
