As a long-term community partner and board member, I assumed interim operational leadership of the organization following the departure of prior executive director. In this role, I am providing team leadership for the 14-person staff and am managing our multimillion-dollar budget. Working in collaboration with the board, I am responsible for implementing organizational vision and mission. I also ensure regulatory compliance, report regularly to board, monitor the budget, negotiate contracts and government grants, and lead program delivery. When I assumed leadership, we had just started on an organizational renaming/rebranding initiative that I continue to oversee (this is still in progress). The ultimate goal is to expand our services and fully adopt a dual-generation approach to working with young mothers and their children. In the past year, I also identified and have taken action to strengthen the organization, including identifying new funders and donors, and fortifying policies and procedures. Additionally, I am steering the organization successfully through the continued challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. ► ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS: ✓ Sourcing candidates and working to fill staff vacancies, including filling new senior leadership roles. ✓ Upgrading salary and benefit packages as a step toward ability to attract and retain top leadership talent. ✓ Nurturing donor relationships and cultivating new fundraising opportunities. ✓ Creating strategies to pursue and attract more funding and support from high-net-worth donors of color. This included hiring staff, developing and monitoring our budget, managing contracts, and establishing community connections. I also worked in concert with our governing body that was comprised of 22 steering committee members. ► KEY CONTRIBUTIONS: ✓ Built community-wide connections and innovative public-private partnerships with city and county government leaders, law enforcement, community-based organizations, plus area hospitals and businesses in a collaborative effort to reduce the number of babies born prematurely in Fresno, CA. ✓ Raised awareness of issues related to adverse birth outcomes in the Fresno community where 1,500 premature babies were born every year, with huge disparities based on race and ethnicity. Achieved significant reduction in the preterm birth rate, in less than 3 years, from baseline of 13% to 10.1%. ✓ Generated invaluable, free earned media in the form of television and radio interviews on stations such as NPR, local TV stations, and Univision, plus articles and press releases in local Fresno County newspapers. ✓ Introduced racial equity training for board members and staff, with a curriculum that addressed implicit biases and racism as well as building empathy through a lens of equity, for working with diverse populations. ✓ Led program to receive the 2017 Excellence in Partnership Award in the Research and Evaluation category, presented by the UCSF’s Center for Community Engagement and Council. ✓ Created a pioneering “Parent Council” that brought together parents who had experienced preterm birth to take part in all facets of the program, sharing their lived experiences.
