I had the pleasure of managing Sandra Welbeck through her Data Science Internship at Brad’s Deals. Over the course of the summer, I watched her develop or build upon excellent core skills with machine learning, python, SQL, git, professional writing, and stakeholder management. Her passion for this work was apparent immediately, and her ability to upskill quickly impressed me. She is an exceptionally talented young professional with a strong sense of integrity, and she would be an asset to any data-driven organization. One of Sandra’s internship tasks was to develop a predictive model about subscriber behavior. She delivered an excellent work of research, which included a cross-validated model selection process, complex SQL queries to pull features from a data warehouse, and a detailed written synthesis of both her work and related previous work. She took the initiative to reach out to stakeholders to obtain relevant context and historical information, and her manner with them was always both cordial and professional. Another of Sandra’s internship tasks was to automate a process that calculates data for a Tableau dashboard. She designed a table in Snowflake to warehouse the data, wrote a python script to calculate and insert new values, and orchestrated the script with Airflow. Throughout this task, she incorporated feedback from data engineers through pull requests and code reviews, and the result that she delivered is elegant, robust, and useful. I’m proud to report that it has been running daily in production for weeks so far with zero failures. Having seen it firsthand, I am thoroughly confident that Sandra Welbeck can deliver value to a Data Science team pursuing projects in advanced analytics or applied machine learning where she can continue to develop her skills. Please feel free to reach out if there are any additional questions I can answer.
