Designing an Interface for an Explainable Machine Learning Risk Model for Predicting Illegal Shipbreaking. In the battle against the illegal dismantling of ocean-going ships, the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) aims to use data-driven AI solutions. Explainable AI models (XAI) are being developed to predict which ships are likely to be illegally dismantled in the future. This thesis study focuses on visualizing the explanations of the model’s predictions in order to make them accessible to the ship inspectors of the ILT. Current visualization research is mostly targeted at data scientists or model developers, but these visualizations are often too complex for end-users of a system. My user-centered research aims to design an XAI interface that effectively supports the ship inspectors in preventing illegal shipbreaking. Show less
