I am currently undertaking a PhD in gamma-ray burst astrophysics, as part of the astrophysics department at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, UCL. Included in my research is being a UV/Optical telescope (UVOT) support scientist for the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst mission. This role in the Swift team means that I am responsible for the reduction and analysis of the UVOT data and communicating this in reports to fellow GRB scientists. Throughout my time at the placement, I handled large arrays of data and performed image analysis on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery. This involved, using algorithms to increase signal-to-noise. I determined what SAR polarisation bands worked best for various images. During this project, I used GIS (Geographic Information System) skills and python plugins. During this project I worked with a λ = 1080 nm Grade 4 laser and collaborated on research for a published paper. I helped with the construction of the beam delivery system, for usage at CERN. Additionally, I conducted diagnostics on the beam profile. Throughout this project I was able to implement my programming skills in LabVIEW, python and MATLAB.
