Dr. Levine’s book:
Paul Edwards
Professor Levine's book, "Was Yosef On The Spectrum?" was both thought-provoking and compelling as a feasible explanation for the narrative of the Israelite patriarch Yosef in the Bible. As an avid amateur theologian and Bible student of nearly two decades, I'd had numerous occasions to stop and wonder about details not mentioned or explained in Yosef's story. Why would someone of such caliber and character be so careless as to disclose lofty visions of grandeur to hostile family members? Why did this young man, upon becoming viceroy of Egypt, never write home to his family, to let them know he was alive? And how does someone so (supposedly) careless arrange such a sophisticated trap for the same brothers who betrayed him? According to Prof. Levine's detailed and well-researched position, it is quite feasible Yosef was somewhere on the spectrum, and medical professionals of the day simply lacked the language or understanding to fathom it. Like so many other Biblical scenarios that seem contrived, exaggerated or fairytale-ish ... books like "Was Yosef On the Spectrum?" give visibility to real-life stories that the English language fails to convey, in interpreting ancient Hebrew, and breathe new life to faith.
