The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government-run summer residential programme offered to 16-17 year olds. Through the programme they develop new skills and complete a 'social action project' to help their community. My role was as team leader to a group of 15 young people. Team leader's are responsible for the effective running of the programme as well as supervising and mentoring the young people. I was responsible for the general running of the programme, ensuring all young people were getting the most out of the programme and offering support to those who were finding it hard to adjust to life away from home. Through this role I developed great communication, problem-solving and organisation skills that I have been able to apply to other areas such as my academic work.

My work at The Onley Arms involved working behind the bar and in the restaurant as well as serving food. My other responsibilities included jobs related to the running of a restaurant such as taking bookings, cleaning, taking stock etc. This position helped me develop my team-working skills and allowed for me to improve my ability to work well under varying degrees of pressure. Mencap are a national charity that works with people with learning disabilities. The Mencap branch in my area provides a summer play scheme for young people with additional needs. I worked as a play support worker for two summers which involved providing one-to-one care with a young person and facilitating the running of the summer scheme. The role required me to supervise the young people, encourage play and provide assistance when needed. The successful running of the programme relied on the skills and support provided by the play scheme workers.
