The Ward Lab studies the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite able to infect most species of warm-blooded mammals. In humans, it can cause disease in immunocompromised individuals and developing fetuses. Toxoplasma utilizes a form of gliding motility to move and invade host cells. The glideosome, which drives this motility, is made up of a complex of proteins including actin, Myosin A, and its light chains (MLC1 and ELC1). Using insect and bacteria cells to express and purify myosin A and its light chains that are then used in an in vitro motility assay to assess protein activity. Experience: Cell culture, western blotting, flow cytometry, protein purification, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis.
