I had the pleasure of working for Sam in two different roles, initially as Group Reporting Manager when he was Group Financial Controller at Spectris plc, and then as part of the global transformation programme which he was leading. Sam is a great leader; he took the group finance function which was already mature and established, and took it to a whole new level with far greater business insight, more in-depth analysis, and a focus on forecasting/forward thinking which is critical for a complex listed business. He really raised the profile of the group finance team amongst the Exec team and operating companies, and delivered significant value to the business. After Sam moved on to the transformation programme, which was the most high-profile transformation programme in Spectris’ history, I wanted to continue to work for him and he brought me on to the programme as a Global Finance Process Owner. Sam was a highly effective leader of the finance/HR/IT programme, and built up a very strong, high performing team under him which operated under a highly praised governance structure. He commanded the respect of not only the team below him, but the Exec team, the operating company leadership teams and also the Board of Directors. This was all down to Sam’s hard work, leadership approach and resilience. Sam has consistently shown that he operates at the highest levels of finance and has continued to mentor me after we’ve both left Spectris. I do hope I get the opportunity to work with Sam again in the future.

Sam and I worked together at Spectris, where he led a highly effective head-office based group finance function, Latin America team and latterly, the group’s finance transformation team. Not only did he hold a sharp pencil in relation to the numbers, he also had a keen ability to horizon scan and possessed superb value chain insight. By stepping up to be part of the team leading the group’s transformation efforts, Sam showed himself to be operationally astute, a strong strategist and adept at change management. Sam commanded a high level of respect, credibility and influence within the business, Executive team, and the Board. He will, no doubt, be a strategic CFO and a valuable addition to the leadership team of any business that he joins.
