Bio
Pavlos Andreadis
As my student in "Reinforcement Learning", Sambit was one of the most active students, and made good use of the lecture and office hours. He would always listen attentively to his colleague’s questions and my responses, and would ask questions when he felt he did not have the complete picture. I would say that Sambit has a deep desire to understand things, and is driven by a need to expand his knowledge and expertise. Sambit was part of a team of students whose visit to my office would turn into an improvised tutorial. Such was the quality of the interaction, that I then transformed that material into an in-class tutorial, which I easily adapted to a lecture. Sambit would go on to master the course, achieving a grade of 92. When redesigning "Introductory Applied Machine Learning - Distance Learning" to offer a course that would at least match the level of interaction and learning outcomes of the on-campus versions, I sought to appoint a Teaching Assistant (TA) with good experience working in the industry. Having maintained contact with Sambit, he was the obvious choice. Though Visa issues would lead to Sambit not being able to act as an industry advisor to the students, as originally planned, I was happy to see his drive for learning having remained strong. He challenged me to come up with more intuitive answers to fundamental questions, and together we developed a series of study guides that were released to the IAML-DL students on a weekly basis. Sambit was never late, and all of our communications were meaningful and productive. We are considering the evolution of these study guides into an introductory textbook on machine learning.
