Project Coordinator for Project ASCEND in the Early Dual Language Development Laboratory at the University of Oregon. Project ASCEND (Addressing Structural Disparities for Children with Early Communication Disorders; 1R01DC020402-01; funded by NIDCD) will apply a health disparities framework to precisely detect, understand, and develop solutions that address structural racism and support equity for children of color with communication disorders in early intervention (EI). In partnership with 5 states, we will use state-level data to first identify inequities in early intervention referral, eligibility, and service allocation outcomes according to child intersecting identities, community resources, and EI systems features. Then, we will contextualize these inequities via focus groups with parents of children of color with communication disorders, surveys of key EI professionals, and interviews with EI leadership. Finally, we will complete a stakeholder consensus process to generate and prioritize practice and policy recommendations to disrupt structural racism for children with communication disorders in EI. Advisors, including parents of children of color with communication disabilities, adults with communication disabilities, EI providers, parent advocates, EI administrators, and scholars of color and/or with disabilities, will inform all aspects of the study. Project ASCEND will ultimately result in a set of comprehensive, stakeholder-informed, data-driven, and feasible recommendations to improve equity in early intervention for the 1 in 5 children of color affected by early communication disorders.
