Calisthenics is a uniquely Australian sport that through strength and beauty aims to achieve these physical attributes, as well as influences the emotional and social development of girls and boys through friendship, self confidence and teamwork. As a Calisthenics coach I teach a team of participants a number of routines choreographed to music and they then present these routines on stage at competitions and concerts. Pupils learn between four and seven routines concurrently throughout the year. This is where the diversity of the sport is shown. In addition to team items, participants can compete in solo and duo items which I also coach a number of participants. Calisthenics can be categorised as both a sport and an art. As a sport it encourages physical development, coordination, self-discipline and team spirit. As an art it develops an appreciation of music and rhythm, the beauty of correct technique and the excitement of performing. I have been involved in calisthenics at a high level since the age of 3. Competing for 20 years as well as coaching younger age groups.
