Job Summary: Implement forest health prescriptions to foster timber stand growth, resiliency to fire and disease, and wildlife habitat. Serve as part of a seasonal timber crew and work in the field daily to prepare various timber sales and/or stewardship projects by marking wildlife trees, boundaries, and cut/leave trees. Duties: -Use tracer paint to designate trees to be kept or cut based on tree spacing, tree health, wildlife habitat, and proximity to roads and recreation areas -Work with Foresters and Silviculturalist to prepare designated areas for timber sales -Establish public fuelwood areas by cutting trees and establishing temporary forest roads -Use GPS, ArcMaps, and Avenza Maps to determine unit boundaries -Cruise the timber in the unit to determine volume of timber to be removed and determine an associated value to charge for the timber -Use chainsaw to create space for wildfire reduction, reducing competition for resources between trees, and managing light on the forest floor, which can encourage the establishment and growth of desired tree regeneration -Use chainsaw to thin or cull the forest to a certain Basal Area or Spacing based on tree species, size class, and health -Use Prism to determine Basal Area -Slash in temporary roads in order to mitigate erosion as well as close access to motor vehicles -Perform daily cleaning and maintenance on both Stihl and Husqvarna chainsaws -Use radio to communicate with coworkers ans superiors -Use proper Personal Protection Equipment as required by the task at hand -Identify common trees in the Pike and San Isabel National Forests such as Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Pinyon Pine, Limber Pine, Douglas Fir, Engelmann Spruce, Blue Spruce, Rocky Mountain Juniper, and Aspen -Assist other departments in the district such as Recreation, Fire, and Wildlife Biology when needed Show less
