Mexican Spotted Owl Technician II
-
Jun 2015 - Jul 2015
Backpacked or drove to a new location within the national forests of New Mexico each workday, often in remote areas with extensive travel. Work was done in teams of two to three people. Hiked to survey points at night and followed a strict protocol of broadcasting spotted owl calls. Hiking was often done off-trail, through dense brush and on steep terrain. Identified spotted owls and determined sex, distance and azimuth from survey point. Other owl species were identified by sight or call. Returned to campsite or vehicle in dark. Drove 4WD vehicles on rough terrain and forest roads. Completed a seven night horse packing trip to get to remote locations. Coordinated with USFS fire crews and biologists to avoid fire areas and determine the best routes for access to sites. Contacted the crew leader daily using satellite communicators. Used Google Earth, maps, and GPS units to find locations. Show less

Jul 2013 - Nov 2013
Began work day before dawn and walked line transects searching for bat and bird strikes caused by wind turbines. Surveys were conducted in buggy conditions, inclement weather, and around rattlesnakes. Upon finding specimen, information on surrounding vegetation, species of specimen, visible injuries and infestations, age, sex, and gender were collected. Range finders were used to measure distance to turbines and compasses were used to take azimuth of specimen from turbine. If species was not readily identifiable, measurements and additional pictures were taken. Pictures were uploaded and cataloged daily and data was entered and maintained in MS Excel. Safety precautions around wind turbines were followed and radios were used for regular contact. Show less
