After arriving back from my year abroad, I dove straight back in to the Lancaster lifestyle, undertaking several tasks for University House preparing for study abroad students to come to Lancaster. Firstly, I had an administrative marketing role in which I managed the constructing and delivering of important documents to international universities. This was an important role carried out to attract students to visit Lancaster University. This roll was very physical and required a lot of energy and motivation. Later, when students had enrolled for Lancaster University, I was asked to work with University House again, providing study abroad students with tailored travel packs to be sent each student in their home countries in order to help them prepare for their stance in Lancaster. Finally, once the students had arrived in the UK, I undertook a more active role with the students as a Student Ambassador. Firstly I showed students around if they needed directions or simply wanted a tour of the university campus with their family. Secondly I worked in a team with other Ambassadors and the Study Abroad department to help all of the arriving students to sign up to their courses. Ensuring they had enough modules on their course list and the permission necessary to study them. Also it was my role to help each student with their decisions if they weren’t sure and to eliminate any confusion so that each student was confident to start their studies. Show less

During this summer I enrolled in a homestay programme in which I lived with a Spanish family for free in exchange for giving English lessons. My student was the husband of the family and I taught him English for 4 hours each day. My roles were to provide up to date, intellectually stimulating learning material (such as relevant news articles or challenging literature), to recognise patterns of mistakes and to explain the corrections in an efficient way in order to stop them from reoccurring and therefor create a fluent English speaker. The most challenging aspect of my role as an English teacher was to correct errors that my student was used to making which I did by creating memorable examples and clear explanations. Show less

      • Oct 2008 - Dec 2009

I worked most weekends during my time off university. My main job role was to make and serve drinks to customers at the bar during the evenings where Chicago Rock became a nightclub. However, I also worked during the day. This job has accustomed me to working extremely quickly in a very busy environment. During my time here I dealt with large quantities of money and learned how to work on more complex tills. It has also helped me in furthering my customer skills, dealing with dissatisfied customers and disorderly behaviour. I thoroughly enjoyed this job and have made many friends there. Show less

    • Head of Administration
      • Jul 2009 - Sep 2009

During my summer holidays from university I worked in administration in the Profit Centre for Edmundson Electrical, a large multinational company on the largest established trading estate in Europe. I worked alone on my own tasks, but also as part of a team, as my work contributed to the other staff and vice versa. I worked 8.30am – 5pm in a team of ten people. Some of my daily tasks included; banking, dealing with customers in person and via telephone, filing, paying invoices and charging customers. This job gave me a great insight into the world of communication and a deeper look into the functions behind a business. It also helped me to improve greatly my customer skills, dealing with tough situations, meeting customer and supplier deadlines and furthermore taught me how to motivate myself to do a repetitive job. During my time here I have dealt with lots of responsibility, for example handling large amounts of cash and also money on the computer systems (for example on the EPCS and Dileafile machines).
