• Conduct winter bat surveys in caves and culverts to quantify distribution and abundance of bats in Texas prior to the arrival of white-nose syndrome. • Collect biological samples from bats for the testing of Pseudogymnoascus destructans. • Assist and oversee the application of white-nose syndrome treatments in Texas alongside collaborators at Kennesaw State University and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. • Assist and take lead with grant applications, manuscripts and regulatory report writing for partners (including Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Cave Management Association). • Train and supervise research technicians. • Develop and foster positive collaborations with partners, state agencies and landowners. • Engage in media and public outreach via presentations and interviews. • Obtain state permits and IACUC approval for research and conduct administrative responsibilities to maintain approval status (e.g. reports, training). Oversee the breeding and husbandry of a captive population of the endangered Pacific pocket mouse (PPM) • Assess reproductive status in captive PPM and run breeding events. • Conduct behavioral and hormonal experiments, collect biological samples (e.g. fecals samples, pinna snips for genetic analysis), assist with medical examinations and administer medication as necessary, mark mice (fur-clips, p-chips) • Maintain studbook and databases. • Assist in the preparation of captive mice for release to the wild (e.g. development and implementation of predator training, constructing and installing biodegradable man-made dens and burrows, releasing PPM into acclimation cages, releasing PPM from acclimation cages, supplemental feedings for released PPM, follow-up trapping of release PPM) • Run hormone assays using fecal samples for a number of reproductive and behavioral hormonal studies (estradiol, progesterone and corticosterone assays). • Assist with grant report writing. • Develop and conduct research projects investigating male-induced estrus, female mate choice, and polyandrous mating. • Oversee and organize regular and short-term volunteers to assist with husbandry duties and oversee a research assistant. • Assisting with other research projects when required (e.g. trapping Stephen's kangaroo rats for a genetics study, setting up camera trap studies, other small mammal trapping).
