Legal intern and research assistant: I carried out independent legal research for a number of family and criminal law cases. I was required to draft submissions for sentencing, sentencing indications and legal memoranda. Further tasks included drafting emails, formatting legal forms, observing client interviews, and summarising case files prior to Court hearings. This position built upon my legal skills, and experience working in a busy law firm. Victoria University of Wellington summer scholarship: I participated as a research assistant for the Marsden Fund “Soldiers of Empire” project. This scholarship was conjointly awarded to me through Puke Ariki and Victoria University. I was required to catalogue and index the large New Plymouth Garrison Order book from 1864 for the 57th and 70th British army regiments. I created an online public database and presented my research findings to the public at an open seminar. The work I completed has contributed to the History Department of Victoria University and Puke Ariki. This job enabled me to develop my research abilities, confidence in public speaking and expertise with IT programmes including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
