In the relatively short time of working with Sam I have been continuously impressed with her fresh approach, strategic thinking and commitment to Discovery ADR. Sam challenges us to think differently, encourages us to look further ahead than the immediate requirement and goes over and above to ensure a positive outcome is achieved. Any company looking for a practical, 'no nonsense' approach to their marketing should seriously consider Sam to support them.

Debbie Richards

I first worked with Sam in her role as Head of Marketing at Theatre by the Lake in 2007 and was delighted to have the opportunity of working with her over the course of a number of projects. Sam is a consumate marketer with a great breadth of knowledge and combines a passion for the creative with a determined focus on getting things done!

1863 (formally known as Elm House) is a Victorian guest house set in the heart of Pooley Bridge, an idyllic Lakeland village on the shores of Ullswater. Originally the village blacksmith's shop and then the sub-postmaster's house, 1863 has now been reimagined for the 21st century. More than a bar, bistro and seven elegant bedrooms, they are a family affair who enjoy getting the little things just right and welcoming guests back time and again to share in a slice of Lakeland paradise. I've joined the team to help them get the new branding right and work out a cost-effective, sustainable marketing strategy. Show less

    • Pooley 'new' Bridge Paver Project
      • Oct 2019 - Oct 2020

As a resident and Parish Councillor of Pooley Bridge, it was my civic duty to lend my time to support the Pooley 'new' Bridge paver project. In Autumn 2019 we put 301 engraved pavers up for sale to locals and visitors so that they could have their name carved into Pooley 'new' Bridge for posterity. At £295 each they weren't cheap but we sold all 301 in short order raising £80,000 (before costs) for a Community Fund to help support projects and events that would benefit the village community. The pavers will be available to view from late October 2020 once the new bridge opens to pedestrians and vehicles. I subsequently co-ordinated and edited a Book of Memories for the project telling the story of the bridges at Pooley along with the stories behind those who chose to buy a paver on the new bridge. Located between the villages of Tirril and Pooley Bridge, Barton Church is a popular and much-loved local place of worship that has played a part in the lives of thousands of locals over the centuries. Dating back to the 12th century, it has celebrated the key moments in the year for the local community as well as births, marriages and deaths of generations of Barton parishioners as well as families from the Penrith area and much further afield. However time and weather have taken their toll on this historic building and its last inspection highlighted the need for some major re-pointing work to the exterior walls. A funding boost in the form of £23,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) means that this urgent work to preserve it for future generations will now be able to be carried out. The terms of the funding means that alongside the restoration work, I have been asked to deliver marketing activity to share the architectural and historical heritage of St Michael’s Church, Barton. Working with a brand new product / organisation always means exciting times, and this one is, I think, going to be rather special indeed. Another Place, The Lake is the first in a new collection of hotels from the team behind Watergate Bay in Cornwall. Their mantra - 'Detox, Retox' says it all really: active days out and about in the valley and on the lake, relaxed evenings by the fire or in the bar - with friends and family or with a book. My remit is to help them quickly establish deeper ties with the surrounding area, ensure they can share great local events with visitors and that even if it rains 24/7 - the most discerning of guests will come away feeling that they've had a busy and satisfying escape to the lake. I've been lucky enough to be asked to work with the Lake District Calvert Trust team on their highly creative 'Go Herdwick' Public Art Trail. Fifty life-size models of Herdwick ewes, sponsored by local businesses and made beautiful by international, national and local artists, will be available for your appreciation from April 2016 between Keswick and Windermere. This is probably one of the projects I am most proud of being involved with. We worked with 75 artists and over 80 local businesses to sponsor and decorate each ovine masterpiece. After the public art trails closed in September 2016, the herd flocked together for a very special V-ewe-ing at Rheged featuring the fell side set from Theatre by the Lake's acclaim production of 'A Shepherd's Life'. We were absolutely delighted that over 4000 people came to see the flock for their final appearance. In the end all 108 ewes and lambs sold at a Grand Gala Auction in October 2016 raising a total of £250,000 for the Lake District Calvert Trust - smashing the original target of £120,000. We then went on to win the Judges Special Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Cumbria Life Culture Awards in 2017 and also the Tourism Event of the Year at the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2017. A very special project indeed. Show less
