As a Research Analyst at Seattle Public Schools, I conducted research under two IES-funded Researcher-Practitioner Partnership grants focusing on racial and ethnic disproportionality in school discipline and parent involvement in students' transition from middle to high school. For the Seattle Minority Engagement and Discipline Reduction Research Collaborative (MENDR) grant I collaborated with researchers from the University of Washington's School Mental Health and Research Training (SMART) Center. I conducted two studies and worked on a targeted intervention at one Seattle middle school. In one study I used multi-level modeling to examine racial and ethnic disproportionality in suspensions and expulsions with a focus on the role of school climate, particularly positive relationships with teachers and peers. The second study was a qualitative interview study of four middle and high schools in the Seattle Public School district to highlight promising practices in schools with a track record of improving disproportionate discipline. We targeted one school with high disproportionality for professional development and data tracking using the Establish Maintain Restore (EMR) program for fostering teacher-student relationships. I also contributed to materials and facilitated a data training for school-based Racial Equity Teams. For the Continuous Improvement in Ninth Grade Student Outcomes through Engaging Families to Support Students in the Transition from Middle to High School grant I collaborated with researchers from Johns Hopkins University. I processed data for a tailored analysis of Seattle Public Schools attendance data and it's predictive value for high school graduation. I also helped support school teams in their efforts to communicate with and involve families in their students' successful transition from middle school and high school. Show less
