Gaetano Borriello's lab focuses on technology for emerging regions, or information and communication technology for development (ICTD). The lab has created a suit of information collection and management tools called Open Data Kit (ODK). As part of my research, I am the lead developer on ODK Tables, a database browser and visualizer for Android. ODK Tables lets application designers create apps using only HTML and JavaScript files. Our framework handles the persistence and synchronization between devices. The project is currently in alpha release and is undergoing a pilot study in Kenya. Show less

I interned at Yelp for three months as a member of the Advertising Team. Over the course of the internship I solved a number of issues in the main Python codebase as well as completed an independent project. The project was to design a web-based platform to visualize data stored in Amazon EC2. The platform included geographic visualizations using Google Maps apis. The framework was designed to be extensible, supporting additional visualizations by sharing a common interface. My work at Yelp was in Python, HTML, and JavaScript. Show less

Performing algorithmic and machine learning analysis of electrocorticographic brain recordings during hand movement. Applying classifiers and regressors with the long-term goal of driving a prosthetic hand using brain signals. I ended up having the most success with boosted decision stumps. In other words, the lab made recordings from the surface of people's brains as they were asked to move their hand. Their movements were recorded with a special glove. I then used algorithms map brain signals to hand movements. If we get good enough at this sort of thing, eventually we'll be able to control robotic hands with our minds. Show less

Investigated gene and pseudogene expression in the remyelinating spinal cord. Emphasis on demyelination resulting from injury and disease. Completed and defended a master's thesis. Myelin is essentially the insulation around the nerves in the central nervous system (CNS). It is remarkable for being one of the few components of the CNS that regenerate after injury. The regeneration process is called remyelination. This is of particular importance in diseases like multiple sclerosis, where the myelin is damaged. As a member of Robin Franklin's lab, I investigated an Oct4 pseudogene and its potential role in remyelination. Show less

Developed an in vitro culture paradigm of the mouse retina. Elucidated the time point at which retinal glia lose developmental multipotency. Culture system continues to serve as a means of assessing the effects of transgenes and compounds on cell proliferation and survival. Developed an in vitro culture paradigm of the mouse retina.
