Constructing and maintaining fuel breaks throughout Alameda and Contra Costa county in order to protect East Bay Parks' land as well as neighboring communities. Primary duties include operating and maintaining chainsaws and removing invasive species in order to restore the native landscape and create a fire resistant habitat to protect our parks and community. Projects include falling trees such as pines, limbing up native trees, removing ladder fuels, clearing fallen trees and debris from roadways, chipping debris or creating burn piles, assisting with prescribed burns, responding to wildfires on EBRPD land, and interacting with the public by responding to questions about fuels reduction and EBRPD. Operating chipper machines; assisting in preparing control lines and serves as holding crew during controlled burn and mops up hot spots utilizing backpack pumps, chainsaws and/or other hand tools to effectively control prescribed burns; applies herbicides to help control undesirable vegetation, using backpacks or hand-held sprayers; lays out and stakes erosion control fiber rolls, blankets, and netting; spreads straw; plants small trees and shrubs; spreads grass seed to help restore sites after vegetation removal; cutting fireline, mopping up hot spots, and supporting hoselays by using chainsaws and/or other hand tools to assist with wildland fire suppression.
