Student Researcher
-
Sep 2013 - Aug 2015
My current research begins to investigate the interactions of microbial communities within mega fauna to inform health and sustainability of the host animal non-invasively developing this as a microbial biomarker. Building on human and mouse model insights, this approach has potential broad applications in the wildlife realm including: endangered species monitoring, tracking landscape epidemiology of diseases, quantitatively assessing host-microbe-habitat interactions and far reaching correlatives of animal fitness to environmental quality. New opportunities are being developed for integrating host genome markers (RAD-seq) with the non-invasive protocol.

Clostridium difficile invasion study - I assisted a PhD candidate in the Holben Lab with her study assessing the effects of anti-biotic and pro-biotic treatments on the invasion of C. difficile through changes in composition of the mouse gut microbiome. I will use the lab techniques learned in my future research concerning wildlife disease ecology.

Effects of cattle grazing on headwater streams – I assisted an MSU masters student in sampling streams for species presence and abundance along the Rocky Mountain Front using block nets, electroshocking and depletion estimates to inform the effects of grazing on species diversity. Video production for small educational projects and docs as well as back country cinematography for remote filming of scenics or wildlife. I am capable of capturing scenes far beyond the usual range into the most remote wilderness unsupported for extended periods. Working out of Glacier National Park seasonally but available for short projects in winter depending on the project. Limited gear available and a self contained editing bay (FCP proficient). I assisted in remote sample acquisition to establish the distribution of fisher in Glacier National Park using remote cameras and non-invasive DNA collection. This entailed skiing into the Belly River and St. Mary valleys in winter on 3‐4 day excursions, as well as deconstructing sample sites in the spring. Biological Technician - NCDE Grizzly Bear DNA Project
-
May 2012 - Oct 2012
I was a backcountry intern in the Bob Marshall Wilderness within the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem (NCDE) of northwest Montana, the last stronghold of grizzly bears in the lower 48 states. Population size, trend, survival, and bear corridors within the NCDE were estimated using DNA mark recapture. Due to the isolated nature of the study area I remained in the backcountry for stretches of 3 to 6 week periods conducting sample collection. The information gathered will be used to inform the potential delisting of the species from its ESA listing.

Glacier Trailhead Cabins started in 1999 and has seen great success in the St.Mary Valley. It has been a great learning experience for me to be involved in the many facets of this business. Everything from payroll to website construction and marketing and definitely including everything in between, this is a small business experience through and through and i wouldn't change a thing.
