At RWA I was a wilderness liaison to my clients. Once on the river, my clients looked to me for everything, including cooking meals, navigating boats through whitewater, medical attention, local history and lore, ecological information as well as hike supervision. Being a wilderness river guide is an extraordinary job because you get the chance to show people what it means to slow down, turn off the cell phone (no reception) and enjoy the world as it was before it became so busy. At Huizhen Academy I taught English as a Second Language at the secondary/middle-high school level. For my seventh and eighth grade classes, I focused on grammar fundamentals and vocabulary acquisition, as well as entry-level conversation techniques. For my senior classes I focused on conversation prompts and structures--the discussion of ideas and opinions. In addition to covering conversational English with my senior students, I also prioritized giving them prompts that would make them address moral and social issues. In rote-driven china, teaching lessons that had critical thinking emphasis was immensely rewarding and also taught me a lot about Chinese culture from the inside out. Also during my time at Huizhen I sub-contracted out my teaching for one day a week to the more rural out-of-town Cicheng Campus. Many of my Cicheng students had never seen a non-Chinese person before, so when I made my weekly appearances there was a lot of hype. In addition, my weekends were spent mentoring a variety of ages as part of the Witts Education Initiative. These sessions allowed me to more closely interact and tutor students from all across the linguistic acquisition spectrum. Mentoring these kids was the most rewarding experience I've ever had in any classroom! Show less
