I worked closely with Sam for approximately two years during the detailed design and construction phases of the Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project. The project was technically challenging, built within an extremely constrained brownfields environment and involved many industry firsts including full span erection with a specialised straddle carrier and launching beam system. All aspects of the permanent works design were tailored to suit mass scale precast production and the unique construction methodology. As VSL's technical manager, Sam ensured all the complexities of construction and temporary works were coordinated and incorporated into the relevant design packages - a large undertaking. The project had a very aggressive programme and this placed tremendous pressure on project team. Along the way there were several challenges however these were resolved quickly due to the strong collaboration between the design and construction teams fostered by Sam. He was proactive, foresaw potential issues and focused on getting the best for project outcome. Working closely with Sam, I also learnt a lot about the intricacies of specialised temporary works systems and precast segmental construction. This was invaluable and I appreciate Sam's openness to share his knowledge and experience. It was a pleasure working with Sam. The Area 1 Team would not have achieved what we did without his persistence and dedication to the project. I hope to work with Sam in the future.

Both Sam and myself worked in the cut and cover team for Westgate Tunnel Project. We were responsible for the permanent work design packages for the two Cut and Cover structures located to the west of Westgate Bridge. I was the package lead for the structures and Sam was the lead designer of one of the tunnel initially and then took over the package lead role when i left the project. He led the team, that comprised of engineers and technicians, and delivered to the 100% design stage. He was very focused on delivery and ensured that the quality of the design packages met the project requirements. These two big design packages contained a combined structural detailed design drawings in excess of 700 drawings. To be able to deliver these big packages, while providing directions to the team was a massive achievement. Despite Sam had the pressure on delivering the package in a timely manner, he was very cautious and took necessary steps to ensure the design decision he made was the right one. He was proactive and didn't hesitate to ask the right questions. I was happy to have worked with Sam and looking forward to be in the same team again in the future.
