Winner of the Off Broadway Alliance Award for “Best Family Show” Winner of the Best Performing Arts Company (KidsPass Parent’s Choice Award) Produces, writes, and directs inclusive Award Winning LGBTQ family theatre with the goal to motivate audiences to be their authentic selves. Manages company’s finances. Tours productions around America. Raises money by fundraising through crowding campaigns. Builds relationships with patrons of the theatre. Arranges and negotiates partnerships with LGBTQ organizations. Organizes, schedules, and facilitates rehearsals. Recruits and manages staff and volunteers. "Playwright Sam LaFrage has found an unlikely new audience for drag—kids. A boister- ous new production of his Ragtag Theatre’s Rapunzel at New York City’s SoHo Playhouse offers children a drag-infused, play-within-a-play version of the titular fairy tale, anchored by a redneck queen and a message about self-acceptance. It’s a bizarre blend of traditional children’s theater and scag drag (i.e., rough, intentionally unconvincing) as if a Commedia dell’Arte troupe spent a week studying Bushwig. But it’s a delightful example of how drag can bring its message of pride, confidence, and irreverence beyond the queer community to audiences of all stripes and ages." Don’t just go to this show. Go in droves. Bring your neighbors. Bring your friends. Bring your worst enemies, and let the goofiness settle your long-term differences. (For all that, consider the excellent weekday group rate that Columbia Children’s Theatre offers. See website below for more details.) But most importantly, bring your children. Bring everyone’s children! Then immediately afterward, have them call their grandparents and enjoy the pure thrill of watching them try to explain every strange and wonderful hilarity they have just experienced." JASPER MAGAZINE "What impressed me most was the skill, enthusiasm and professionalism of LaFrage and his young cast, all local performers, and not much more than a decade or so older than their target audience. " AUGUST KRICKEL "While his script is simple, its brilliance lies in its nods to the flexible nature of commedia. There is one genuine moment, however, when Cinderella asks her stepmother why she is so cruel; the answer is simply that life isn't fair, a rather chilling admission. As director, he maintains a non-stop pace on stage; here everything works perfectly." Show less
