      • Jul 2018 - May 2019

Following the life-changing experience and success of my time in City Year during the 2018 Fiscal Year, I decided to reapply for a second year and further sharpen the skills I had learned in my first year. This time, I served as a Second Year Americorps Member at Sydney Lanier High School, located in San Antonio's inner West Side. The experience that I had with City Year, combined with the students that I had impacted me on such a personal level, that I decided to volunteer a second year with City Year. In addition to all of my responsibilities that I had during the FY'18, some new tasks in my job include:- Guiding, assisting First Year Corps Members in their daily tasks- Be a supporter of my co-Team Leaders, and Impact Manager, who oversee the work my team does- Take leadership lead whenever possible. • Americorps Member/8th Grade English Student Success Coach
      • Jul 2017 - Jun 2018

During the 2017-2018 school year, I had the honor to serve 8th graders at Jeremiah Rhodes Middle School in San Antonio's West Side. Although I got to know the over 150 8th graders there at a professional and personal level, I specifically got to work with 20 students that fell under City Year's three categories of focus: 5 Attendance students, 5 Behavior students, and 10 Coursework students. These students are selected based on their previous school years' data, and other factors. For my Attendance students, my objective was to meet with them twice a week for 8 consecutive weeks through a check-in and check-out session. The goal was to get to know students on a personal, yet professional level to help gauge and asses the reason as to why these students had an abnormally high absence rate. The reasons potentially varied week to week (didn't want to attend school, did not have a positive relationship with teacher(s)/students, etc.) Students also set a personal goal each week, in which I kept track of throughout the week to see if they were on track to meeting said goal. For my Behavior students, many of the similar factors talked about with Attendance students also applied. I met with them twice a week for 8+ consecutive weeks, and set goals with them regarding behavioral elements that they displayed throughout the school day. In addition to meeting with them, their behavior was tracked and recorded in order for me to take the DESSA-40 assessment- an online questionnaire consisting of 40 questions. The purpose was to use the assessment's data to determine which aspect of Social-Emotional learning the student needed coaching on.For my Coursework students, the goal was to provide 900 minutes of external learning time for each of the 15 students by the end of the school year. After the year ended, we received back data from their MAP Scores In the end, 75% of my students showed some form of growth by the end of the year. Show less
