I have had the immense and once-in-a-lifetime honor of knowing, working alongside, strategizing and being a community warrior and champion alongside Sal Serrano for more than 5 years. As his heart and passion for his community and giving back would prove, I came to know Sal through his interest in bringing technology and resources to the youth at Horizons Unlimited of San Francisco, Inc. As the Founder of La Voz Employee Resource Group at Macys.com, Sal convened a group of Latinx employees with a similar desire to positively impact Latino youth in the community, and through their service launched a project to refurbish more than 50 laptops to donate to the youth at Horizons. Coupled with his strong desire to expose youth to the tech world and ensure that they see leaders in tech that look like them, Sal organized a coding event for Horizons' youth and raised $2000 to support our work. This history of love for his community, commitment to expose and advance youth and Latinos in tech, and mission to share his talents for greater impact brought him to Horizons' Board of Directors in 2019. With an unparalleled background and experience in Finance and Accounting and a mind for strategy, assessment and vision, Sal brought an energy and intelligence that added great value to the Board. Working in tandem with our Board Treasurer, he was instrumental in supporting our fiscal and financial needs including review, feedback and approval of our independent fiscal audits, researched, informed and helped develop financial practices related to fundraising and donations, and offered insight to a variety of other fiscal needs. He was a calculated and reflective thought partner, led important discussions and always lived in his truth; ensuring that we never lost sight of our narrative as a community organization birthed and dedicated to self-determination, empowerment and transformation. He was just what we needed, when we needed it. His natural and intuitive leadership capacity did not stop as a Board Member. Because of his many strengths and willingness to achieve greater impact, Sal was voted in by his fellow members as Horizons' Board of Directors Vice Chair, where he continued to lead our work with integrity and vision. Sal always embraced the many perspectives and experiences brought to the Board by our members and ensured we were inclusive of all voices. He asked the thoughtful questions. He asked the tough questions. And most of all, he came prepared with ideas and solutions. He helped lead Horizons during one of the most unprecedented times in our nation's history; the COVID pandemic. Juggling work, life, family, global and civil unrest and uncertainty, he remained steadfast in his commitment to our work, our mission, our staff and our youth. Sal emulates brilliance, commitment and partnership. I couldn't have asked for or dreamed of a more capable and dedicated leader and community warrior. My wish is that he receives all that he has given 100 fold!

I can't say enough about Sal Serrano. He helped me a great deal during the early stages of my accounting and finance career. Sal was such a great mentor for me. He was always patient and even-keeled with his team and of course super knowledgeable about the corporate accounting world. I can't thank him enough for helping me navigate through our team's balance sheets and post a myriad of accruals each month end.
