Despite being the youngest PolitiCorps fellow in her year (and maybe ever), we were all blown away by the presence Salome established in her group of fellows. She is incredibly articulate, insightful, and an independent thinker. She takes takes her work seriously, but brings her positivity and sense of humor to everything she does. She wielded her powerful and confident voice to constantly remind the group why the work they did was so critical, and of the importance of always remembering that political issues are ultimately about the lives of people most in need. We can't wait to see the kind of change she makes in the world.

Salome is one of the most inquisitive and critical thinkers I have had in class. Her attendance is exemplary and if she is missing work she will come in either prior to or after school to make up the missing assignments.

The Center for Intercultural Organizing (CIO) is a grassroots, community-based organization driven by our members. As a member-run organization, CIO is composed of and powered by ordinary folks. CIO members come from diverse cultural, ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds. They are immigrants, refugees, U.S.-born citizens, workers, students, asylees, moms, dads, grandparents and, most importantly, allies in the struggle for social justice. Our members share a common belief in a multi-racial, multicultural democracy inclusive of all — and the passion to put their beliefs into action. As the Director of Public Policy and Advocacy, I help create policy and legislative agenda items that reflect the needs of the immigrant and refugee community here in Oregon. I lobby at the city, county and state level to implement policies and programs that impact the community as well as stop policies that would hinder the community. I also lead workshops and informational sessions for our members to get them active and engaged in the political process. Show less
