      At the present time, I am employed as a Pre-Kindergarten homeroom teacher and grade level facilitator. BCIS is a growing, IB accredited school with an age range that spans from 3 to 18 years. In the Elementary School we teach the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and I have enjoyed the challenges of teaching this curriculum to young children. I have just started the third year of teaching in this age group and have been fortunate to experience the change from more formal teaching to play-based learning using The Walker Learning Approach (http://earlylife.com.au/info/home). This has dramatically changed the way in which the early years curriculum is being taught at BCIS and the two different approaches (Walker Learning and PYP) fit well together, allowing the children to access the curriculum in a variety of ways.The children in Pre-Kindergarten follow a free-flow approach, during which they complete investigations, as part of their curriculum and move between different learning areas across three classrooms. Each learning area contains teacher placed provocations which help the children to meet the learning intentions. As the teacher, I work alongside one or two focus children each day, targeting their specific needs and helping them to move forwards in their learning. This hands-on, interactive learning approach encourages the children to inquire into their surroundings and the classroom environment and allows them to take control of their own learning through their interests while challenging them to make the most of their time in school. Part of my role is to make observations, take photographs, collect examples of work to provide evidence of the learning taking place as well as ensuring that each child is challenged at their own level.       I was employed as a class teacher and Reception Year Head of Kuwait English School (KES). KES followed the English National Curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2 and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum in the Preparatory (Kindergarten and Reception) Department. We adapted the EYFS to meet the needs of the children and the constraints of the school premises and shortened school year. Whilst KES was a highly academic school and much emphasis was placed on the academic achievements of the children in our care, we aimed to provide the students with a well rounded and balanced curriculum. During my time at KES I enjoyed and learned much from my managerial position including the need to be motivational, adaptable and organised in the classroom, both in the completion of paperwork and in communication with other staff members. I learned how to combine being open and friendly but at the same time assertive enough to ensure that tasks were completed correctly, competently and on time. Show less
