Safal joined the MS in Business Analytics program here at Cal State East Bay in Spring 2017 and is expected to graduate in May 2019. I am one of the two co-directors of the MS Business Analytics program and also taught her a course in Machine Learning in fall 2018. In the Machine Learning course, we covered topics ranging from data wrangling, feature engineering, to supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms. Safal chose the Telco Customer Churn project from Kaggle as her course project. This project asks for behavior prediction to retain customers and the development of a focused customer retention program. Throughout this project, Safal has demonstrated a solid grasp of the process of applying machine learning. Using Jupyter notebook with Python for the project, she showcased her mastery of data preprocessing and cleaning, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, feature expansion and selection, various machine learning models such as logistic regression, KNN, random forest, and model selection. She has achieved an admirable prediction accuracy. In addition to Machine Learning, Safal has also excelled in many other courses relevant to data science and data analytics, such as database management, statistical learning with R, big data technologies, and optimization. Safal would be an ideal candidate for a position in data analytics/business analytics.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience as a graduate student at CalState-East Bay. It gave me opportunity to really find my passion in Data Analytics. As a result, I was able to secure a 3.8 CGPA on my courses. I worked on multiple projects during this tenure on data mining, statistical Learning, machine learning and data visualization. Brief summary of my projects is as follows: Disneyland Paris Reviews : Mined the FB reviews of Paris Disneyland data and come up with proposals for improving the experience and hence the business Classified the reviews into positive and negative using naïve ba[pyes classification algorithm and achieved 87.72% accuracy Topic modelling was done to give valuable suggestions, like rude staff and long queue are biggest turn-offs and should be improved. San Francisco Crime classification : Developed a classification model that classifies the crime given location and time of crime using R Used and compared various machine learning techniques (e.g. KNN, Decision Tree, Random Forest). Random Forest was found to be best model with accuracy of 54.67% Telco Customer Churn : Used Feature Engineering, Data Cleaning and Exploratory Data Analysis technique to determine the chances of churn for a customer. Various machine learning techniques(e.g. Logistic Regression, KNN, Random Forest) were used to find the best model. Logistic Regression was found to give the best accuracy of 80.47 Show less
