I had the extraordinary pleasure of participating in two study away classes lead by Dr. Thomas. One class explored the unique geology of Iceland while on the other trip we studied landforms along the Trail of Lewis & Clark covering several Western U.S. States. Both classes involved immersion learning in which Dr. Thomas excelled at pinpointing the hard-to-understand reading concepts and presented them to a mixed class of traditional and non-traditional students in a variety of ways that made them easy to understand. On any assignment--whether a test, presentation, journal, or term paper--she always gave prompt, positive feedback. She handled the organizational complexities of a study away/study abroad trip with flawless execution. Dr. Thomas not only identified the volcanoes, glaciers, and rift zones of Iceland and educated us on geography, GPS readings, and cartography techniques relative to the Lewis & Clark expedition; she also had a good grasp of the local cultures and history of each region. She has instilled in me a passion for hands-on learning and I feel lucky to have had her for a teacher. I’m confident she would be a great asset for any academic institution in which she chose to work.
