Vaughan Merlyn, CBRM

I have had the pleasure to know and work with Roy since the late 1980's. We have collaborated closely on research, management consulting and executive education. Roy is a master in architecture, knowledge management, customer experience, relationship management and organizational change. His ability to conceptualize, design and deploy knowledge management solutions that work in complex environments is remarkable. Roy is fully committed to quality and continuous improvement. He has a very strong work ethic and high standards of integrity. He has never let me down in the last 30 years we have collaborated across many projects from the predictable to the most complex.

It was a pleasure and rewarding experience working with Roy. He spent over a year helping us transform IT into a principle driven, process oriented, and collaborative IT organization. I have observed, and have learned from it, that he accomplishes his goals through exceptional patience, innovative technical insight, deep understanding of human behaviors, and strategic business-IT sense. Roy’s most significant contributions to NYU Langone Medical Center are (1) his stewardship in the establishment of a web 2.0 IT Operating Model Repository built on SharePoint, (2) his mentoring in the discipline and practice of project and program management, and (3) his coaching in the quality of process and management. Roy conducted several workshops for our staff and I’ve observed that he has a very engaging style. He is a great communicator and an exceptional counselor. He has always surprised me in his analysis and recommendations on resolving business-IT problems. Of course, it also helps that he has that slow southern drawl :-). He thinks differently than I and always brings a different point of view to the table. He is an excellent consultant and I look forward to working with him again.

Allied Coring and Demolition provided concrete coring, sawing, and demolition services in the North Texas region, primarily in and around Dallas-Fort Worth. Contractors use these services to create precise openings for things like doors, windows, pipes or vents or to remove unwanted concrete in a manner that does not disrupt adjoining structures. Allied services enable more-affordable renovation of public infrastructure, allows buildings to be repurposed and landmarks preserved, and lessens the cost of new commercial construction.

I was originally the CIO with a venture startup EquipMD which was acquired by Neoforma in mid-2000. EquipMD provided group-purchasing services to physician offices using the Internet. Neoforma was predominantly focused on hospital procurement and saw EquipMD as a way of accelerating their entry into the physician line of business. Unfortunately, this strategy was never funded as the market decline struck the e-commerce industry shortly after the acquisition. In 1994, Boston Chicken was a high-growth fast-food restaurant company managing 250 stores. The company grew rapidly to as many as 1,800 Boston Market, Einstein’s Bagels, and Noah’s Bagels stores before encountering major financial difficulties. As CTO in the financial turbolent times, my role was to get more from technology even as the budget dwindled.
