I spent a week at this firm shadowing and assisting the team as they represent their clients in court. The specific area of law was criminal defence which allowed me to interact with many different clients. The majority of clients wanted to reduce their sentencing thereby I assisted their representation time into finding solutions which the judge should be lenient to agree with. I undertook work experience at Huddersfield County Court and shadowed a District Judge in his chambers. Throughout the day The DJ had five first hearing dispute resolution appointments, which were all online due to Covid – 19 restrictions. I was able to sit in on without taking part in the proceedings. I was able to understand the foundation of case files, learning where to pull certain information or law from to help understand the hearings in depth. The different types of cases files were small claims, attachment of earrings and PPI claims etc. All the cases heard were family law, thereby being absolutely confidential, as they were under the family court practice. Since 2018 I have completed lots of work experience with this legal firm. It specialises in family law. I made multiple court trips including Leeds crown court and Bradford County court. I learnt how to chronologically file records from clients and conversations between staff and clients. I sat in on meetings, where guardians would fight for their rights to see/keep their children. In my first year of college, I spent my Wednesday afternoons sitting in open trails. I gave myself a tour of the whole buildings. I introduced myself to the Ushers present on the day and told them I was studying law in college and was intrigued to gain some extra knowledge. The cases heard were varied such as Adoption, Money claims and children. The more I visited, the more eager I had to return and to study Law further than A Level in hope to one day become a Lawyer myself. I worked in the NHS litigation department in Leicester for a week. This was incredibly eye opening for me as the cases varied hugely from a patient with a broken finger to a patient’s death. At times were the NHS were at fault, it was interesting to see the process of which compensation was given to the patient or the patients family. Within this experience, I got to visit the Magistrates court In Leicester, working with the NHS team defending the doctors in inquests. It was interesting to see two different types of inquests, one where both parties were present. Another where only one party (Us) showed. Show less

I spent my time here with a District Judge in the Bradford County and Family court. This was a very rare opportunity for me as I got to sit next to a DJ while he heard multiple cases per day. I watched the process of numeral cases which all differed. This gave me an insight to what advantages and disadvantages going into this particular area of law offered. My days were always full as I entered different court rooms, meeting many different people who either worked at the court or had a case in the court. Show less
