Work conducted includes: Determining the developmental time frame for the PR2 gene, whose homolog is implicated in human cancer metastasis, in Drosophila through temperature-sensitive knockout. Using ImageJ to examine ommatidia stress-fiber lengths in wild-type vs mutant vkg loci. Examining the neural degeneration of photoreceptors in IP3R- Drosophila over time through luciferase assays, studying the ommatidium grommet size in the presence and absence of IP3R and sevenless mutations, and identifying gene expression patterns in the wing discs and eye discs of Drosophila by means of GFP detection, lacZ assays, and antibody staining. Utilizing a forwards genetic approach on Drosophila melanogaster to investigate the downstream effects of the PR2 and ACK1 kinases, and determining how a knockout mutation in PR2 plays a role in the sterility of female flies.
