My introduction into the Marine/Aquaculture industry began with Cooke Aquaculture in Shetland. I was employed as a Marine Operative by Cooke on their Unst and Yell sites. My tasks while here included: Monitoring of feed Monitoring of sea lice and identification Monitoring and prevention of predators Maintenance of cages Removal and recording of mortalities Preparation for hydro and Fresh water operations Harvesting Shortly after starting with Cooke in 2020 the pandemic began. Due to social distancing regulations at the time and minimising contact with others, I began an almost full time role as a deckhand on board the small landing craft Acacia. The role was to transport a team of Surface Supply Divers from Malakoff Ltd. around the various Cooke sites to carry out the tasks of net inspections, mortality removal, freeing propped vessels and removing/installing centre weights. I enjoyed my time in this role immensely as it allowed me an up close insight to the diving sector, allowed me to develop my crane skills by lifting divers out of the sea back on board and allowed me to work with people from diverse backgrounds. The reason I left this role was regrettably due to the remote location during an international pandemic which restricted movement. Show less
