After my placement, I took a couple of months out of work to concentrate on University as a full-time student. I believed this would benefit me as I felt the transition from working full time for a year then returning to being a student would be challenging. Once I was confident enough that I had adapted back into a routine of being a student, I started to look for part-time work that was flexible towards my studies. I was fortunate enough to find a part-time job working in my local supermarket just before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. My primary role at Scotmid is as a snappy shopper home delivery driver. It has further allowed me to develop good timekeeping skills as the deliveries must be on time for the customer. The role has also continued to develop my communication and teamwork skills. Show less

In January 2019, I took up the opportunity of an optional sandwich placement through the University. I worked with Lenovo in their Europe, Middle East, and Asia (EMEA) Chief Accounting team for an entire year. It allowed me to gain vital work experience as their Accounting Placement Student by providing all of the Regional Accountants with support through the financial audit. I would provide support through completing tasks such as the intercompany matrix and VAT to turnover reconciliations for each of their business entities and supply them to the auditors. I would also complete monthly statistical returns and monthly tax accrual journals. I was also required to upload and check payment dates for suppliers’ invoices. These are just some of the tasks and responsibilities assigned to me over the year. These tasks have allowed me to gain significant experience, which will benefit me in any similar role. Over the year, it allowed me to develop my technical skills mainly around excel. I built my formula skills by using Vlookup, Sumif, and Subtotal, etc., daily. Another essential excel skill that I developed over the year was using Pivot Tables. It means that I am now a competent user of excel. The placement allowed me to develop my skills on Outlook professionally, using this to communicate with my colleagues and improve my task management. Another application that allowed me to develop my communication skills was Skype for Business. I would use this to make calls, present my screen in meetings, etc. I also gained experience with Lenovo’s enterprise resource planning software (SAP). Over the year, I would use this daily to pull TB’s, ledger reports, invoices, etc. It was my first time working on software like SAP to this extent, and it has allowed me to gain experience that I can apply to other similar software. The year also developed skills like managing my workload and meeting deadlines. It was essential to avoid penalties for missing any deadlines. Show less

I previously worked as a waiter in the Doubletree by Hilton Strathclyde. This is a role that was enjoyable and flexible with my studies. I gained a lot of experience in this role on qualities such as teamwork, leadership, and adaptability. I mainly worked in the restaurant however, I have also worked on functions and assisted other departments. I would also assist management with stock takes and supervisor cover. The role also taught me how to work towards reaching monthly targets set by management by using upselling skills. I was able to work closely with the customer in this role to provide a high quality of service. Show less
