After graduating from university, I successfully gained a role within the industry that I found the most interesting. Responsibilities included:• Developing fluvial, pluvial and storm surge hazard maps for the US at a 5-metre resolution• Becoming familiar with the company’s own Hydraulic Modelling Software (JFlow) in order to use it on a daily basis• Using GIS to extract flood statistics from JBA’s global maps and writing short Flood Assessment Reports on the data gathered for locations specified by the clients within 24 hours of the request• Working on the Hurricane Michael event response project, developing a storm surge footprint for Florida and researching areas that were affected by the hurricane in order to create a post-event response. Geologist Intern

During the summer break before starting my final year of university, I approached the Geology Department at Airbus Defence and Space who allowed me to spend a few weeks in their office gaining some experience of the commercial side of the industry I am looking to pursue. My main responsibility was to digitise geological information onto a pre-existing project regarding the East African Rift Valley using the software ArcGIS. It was done to a scale of 1:100000m to 1:150000m for commercial use. In addition to this I was exposed to and assisted with other projects involving oil seeps, environmental changes and copper deposits in volcanoes utilising GIS software commonly used in the industry. I very much enjoyed this experience and it confirmed that this is the kind of role I would enjoy in the future. Show less
