In her role as Head of Visitor Experience for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Ruth was my line manager over the past five years. As a manager she was always supportive and encouraging, ready to champion her team in offering a fantastic customer experience and open to new ideas and initiatives to continuously improve what we offered. Ruth is an excellent communicator, brilliant at collaborating and building networks. She is also second to none in dealing with any customers concerns or difficulties, having a warm and engaging personality but always remaining calm in a crisis. She keeps abreast of trends in the heritage field with a keen eye on what works and what doesn't and a pragmatic, considered approach, taking into account budgets and competing demands. She gets involved when she needs to offering sound guidance and advice, but also builds and mentors her team to empower them to use their initiative and deliver fantastic results. Her generous and supportive approach to all her team and colleagues helps to create a lovely team feel and I shall miss working with her but know she is going to to go on to contribute massively to wherever she goes next.

When I was first introduced to Shakespeare Birthplace Trust as an artist that revels in risk and pushing boundaries to create a greater good I expected to find a lot of places I could push within the organisation. However, as I got to know the five distanced grand heritage sites and the teams behind them I discovered that the unifying force that formed team SBT was Ruth Warner. It was her ability to make the risk-averse members of her team have confidence in me that led to the creation of an environment that seeded a nationally celebrated and requested piece of conceptual art. Together we demonstrated that this risk-taking evolved new audiences and demand for culture and heritage experience from folk that sit in a segment of society that believes it is not for the likes of them. The recent pandemic and its devastating effect on the culture industry has made Ruth available and I wholeheartedly recommend her to any cultural organisation that is fortunate enough to have her apply for a post.
