The Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) promotes economic growth throughout the state. Within the DED, I worked in the International Trade and Investment Office. This office is tasked to work with companies to increase demand through international sales leading to increased employment overall. As a new graduate wanting to start a career in Economic Development, I felt this was a perfect match due to my International Studies degree. I started in this position as a Economic Development Professional. Within the organization I am responsible for reaching out to Missouri businesses, meeting with them, and determining how I can add value to their current international sales goals. For every company and in every international market the value added content I provide is different. Some companies need help finding buyers, while others need help with export controls or understanding Value Added Taxes, but we work together to find how I can be of the most assistance to them. In January 2017, I was promoted to Economic Development Specialist in which I began traveling overseas to organize the Missouri pavilion at trade shows and assist Missouri companies that attended. In January 2019, I became a Senior Economic Development Specialist in which I became responsible for overseeing the functions of our Europe, Middle East and India Offices while continuing the work I did as an Economic Development Specialist. The COVID-19 pandemic and recession found me frequently stepping outside of my day-to-day role within the department to assist in Cares Act Funding grants and programs and assisting companies that retooled to manufacture personal protective equipment.
