As class teacher my first role was to make every child, and their parents, feel valued. I often dealt with parents before and after school to discuss anything from why the homework isn’t complete to crucial emotional issues. All of which have to be dealt with sensitively and professionally. So I needed to be organised from early in the morning. All the marking and assessment was completed by my colleague and me, and we then had to set targets and report the data to senior leadership. We planned jointly and ensured the lessons were creative and differentiated so all the children were engaged. As head of drama, I promoted the subject throughout school and ensured it was used across the curriculum. I led staff training and helped colleagues with planning. I also ran a drama club, as well as football coaching. I was also responsible for leading sporting trips and promoting sport within school, particularly girls’ football. I planned several trips and took my class on a two day residential. As class teachers, we also had to ensure the class pages on the website were kept up to date and our subject areas promoted. As well as video presentations for the main entrance and displays around school.

As a Year Six teacher I was responsible for preparing the children for their SATs and administering the exams. This meant regular assessment and feedback of data. We then implemented intervention groups and early morning booster programmes, which had to be planned for. During my two years, I organised major charity events, including a twelve hour disco, for Oxfam. I also produced and directed a production of ‘Joseph’ for children across the four junior classes. This was done on a small budget but made a profit. I was also put in charge of curriculum design when the Government published a new document. This required leading whole school training and writing long term plans for all the year groups. Again, I led a drama club and football club, and a variety of class trips.

As well as my general teacher responsibilities, I was awarded a nationally recognised consultancy role – Advanced Skills Teacher. To acquire this status, I had to be externally assessed for a day. This role was to coach & mentor colleagues in other schools, one day a week. I was employed by the local authority and schools had to apply for my time. As my specialism was creativity, I also worked to promote the arts in education or helped headteachers develop a more creative curriculum. Another strand was training newly qualified teachers and those in training, in a variety of areas, or leading any other training the authority needed. As part of this role, I received training in coaching, which has helped in subsequent jobs. In my final year, this work changed to in-reach, as my school went into special measures and so I led whole school training and supported colleagues within my own setting. Throughout my eight years at this large and challenging primary school, I was responsible for leading some major fundraising activities, including: wrapping the school in a human white band for ‘Make Poverty History’ and re-recording the Band Aid single for an African famine and selling the single. I helped to raise thousands of pounds over the years and promote the school positively in the local and national press. I also produced and directed the annual musicals on a large scale. This often meant sourcing costumes and technical equipment. One senior advisor from the local authority described a performance he saw as the best primary school production he had ever seen. I also promoted the arts and ran cinema and theatre trips, including annual performances of Shakespeare. Again, I promoted sports within school and ran aerobics, football and netball clubs, and managed the football team: taking them to tournaments and hosting matches. As part of an engaging curriculum, I ensured children went on a variety of trips, which gave them a wealth of experiences they wouldn’t usually have.

When I initially joined the company, my main role was being the first point of call for customers, following a sale. Plus, I had to be available to deal with customers within the showroom. I was also responsible for marketing mailshots and updating the website, including liaising with the photographer. Soon, I was heading the event management and responsible for organising key events, like the launch of the Z4 sports car. I also ran in house events and promotions. • Acquisitions and Marketing Manager

As head of development and acquisitions, I was responsible for reading scripts and reviewing films, in order to feedback to the company CEOs about whether we should acquire or invest in them. I then worked closely with the two owners to pitch an international marketing plan to producers to secure the rights. This would include which market/festival we would premiere at and how we would market the product. Or, if dealing with a film in development, we would layout a plan of how we would get the film funded and the subsequent marketing plan. I was then responsible for liaising with the producers at every stage, including accompanying them abroad to festivals that we did not hold an office at. I would also be required to scout new contacts by networking at festivals and markets or through mail shots. I forged some long lasting and important multi-film/programme deals this way. As their first point of contact, I had excellent relationships with all our clients, based on trust and mutual respect. As head of marketing, I was responsible for writing the copy for the company newsletters and fliers for the programmes and films. This would be paired with my initial design, which I would then work on closely with our designers. Again, I was their first point of call and I would ensure they were brought in on budget and on time. Finally, I would arrange all the flights, office or stand requirements, screenings, advertising and shipping for the international markets and festivals. We attended a minimum of three film markets, in Milan, Cannes and LA, every year and three TV markets, one in New Orleans and two in Cannes. I would attend these and deal front of house at the TV markets, to assist with sales, and meet with producers and attend screenings at the film markets. I would also handle any press.

On Watchdog, I was part of a large team preparing for the live Friday broadcast. This could mean sourcing props or calling up companies we were researching. Primarily, it was supporting the production team and dealing with the general public and filtering their complaints. This included answering the telephone on the live show and noting live responses during the broadcast. For ‘Mysteries’ I worked on location as a runner and in Broadcasting House as a researcher. I helped build sets for the re-enactments, set up lighting and supported the crew throughout the production or found new stories online and researched them, again dealing with the general public in pre-production.
