Science Manager Weather Impacts
-
Sep 2013 - Apr 2019
I was the manager of the Weather Impacts team in the Met Office Science programme. We develop new science, tools and products to assist in the forecasting of high-impact weather events as well as the impacts of weather on society, in the UK as well as globally. Some of our projects include: • Hazard Impact Model development: aim is to develop models for risk-based forecasting of weather hazards and impacts in the UK, within the framework of the Natural Hazards Partnership.• Science for Humanitarian Emergencies & Resilience (SHEAR) projects: we are involved in two projects, looking at early warning of landslides in India and probabilistic forecast information of flooding and drought in East Africa. Funded by the UK's Department for International Development, the Natural Environment Research Council and the Economic & Social Research Council. Show less

(Senior) Climate Impacts Scientist
-
Mar 2009 - Sep 2013
My work focused on the land surface scheme JULES for studies of global water resources. In particular I contributed to the development of schemes for irrigation and river flow. I worked on a number of projects, including:• InterSectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP): I coordinated the Met Office contribution to this project. This included developing a configuration of JULES, managing the model runs and reporting and analysing the results. • European Topic Centre on Climate Change impacts, vulnerability and Adaptation (ETC/CCA): I was a contributing expert to a report on flood risk and adaptation in Europe for the European Environment Agency.• EU FP6 Project Water and Global Change (WATCH): An integrated international project on the global water cycle where I evaluated the performance of land surface schemes in arctic environments for climate impacts studies.• UK-Russia Collaboration Project: I was Met Office lead in this project focusing climate impacts and feedbacks in Russia, and in particular on permafrost. I studied the impact of climate change on the risk of flooding and droughts in Europe through hydrological modelling and extreme value analyses. The work resulted in several peer-reviewed publications and technical reports.
