      I manage the Iowa Army National Guard Safety and Occupational Health program. My duties include implementing plans, policies and procedures to comply with Department of Defense, Department of the Army, and OSHA safety regulations and directives. I develop safety goals and objectives; prepare safety policies, procedures and standard operating procedures; organizes and executes program budget; and develops safety training curriculum and reviews. I provide technical expertise to managers and supervisors in establishing techniques and procedures for the elimination or control of unsafe behaviors, environments and hazards. My staff and I plan and conduct periodic and unscheduled safety surveys and inspections of all Army National Guard facilities to determine compliance with OSHA standards. We assign risk assessment codes and prepare abatement plans and time frames for the elimination of hazards. We evaluate the effectiveness of organizational safety programs through activity visits. We develop countermeasure programs to prevent or reduce accidents and hazardous conditions. We provide technical safety training to supervisors and employees using a wide variety of materials, publications and visual aids. We promote safety campaigns through oral presentations at safety committee meetings. We investigate accidents and prepare accident reports with findings and recommendations to correct the unsafe acts or conditions that caused the injury or property damage. Provide assistance and advice to the commanding general of the Iowa National Guard on all matters pertaining to the employment of aviation assets, training of aviation and safety personnel, and the implementation of a quality aviation training and safety program.
