As an Able Seaman I train the crew in fire fighting and water survival during weekly drills. I handle weekly/monthly lifeboat inspections and maintenance of all life saving equipment. I perform all types of ship's maintenance including chipping, painting and greasing. Participate in helicopter operations including fueling. Handle all bulk transfer of cement and barite.

I work on the bridge of large commercial ships looking out the window for dolphins, whales and other forms of marine life. Sometimes I steer the ship so we don't run into stuff. Sometimes I chip away rust and cover the bare spot with paint which will soon rust again. Sometimes I sing pirate songs.
