During Q4 2019 Gloucestershire College signed up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) accord and took the pledge to contribute to tackling the prevailing climate emergency. In so doing, the college has established a high-level strategic pathway for achieving its ambition, setting out two core objectives • To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. • To engage with staff, students, and other stakeholders in raising awareness of the environmental impact of what we all do. To support these objectives, the college identified the need to clarify an emissions benchmark and commissioned Hillside Environmental to support this exercise, creating the college’s current baseline for the measurement of future progress, as well as back dating to measure the progress made to date. It has been a pleasure working with Russ and Hillside Environmental on this project. Russ went over and above the original brief and has been able to add additional value and given us practical options on how we can reduce our carbon emissions and reach net zero by 2040. If you are seriously looking to reduce your carbon emissions then Russ is a great person to talk to. Please contact me if you would like to discuss in more detail what Russ and Hillside did for us.

Having worked with Russ Burton to deliver an innovative low-carbon heat solution for Borders College, I can thoroughly recommend him as an innovative leader in sustainability practice. Russ’ professionalism and flexibility from project inception to completion, including financing, ensured that we were able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint, while also realising revenue savings, and with minimal capital outlay. More widely, Russ and his team have demonstrated wide knowledge and appreciation of the imperatives to delivering a more sustainable society and of the ways that can be achieved. On a personal level, I found he was always approachable and easy to deal with and would be delighted to work with Russ again if the opportunity arose.
