I have designed and developed a bio-mechanical application making use of the extremely accurate anatomical models developed by Zygote. This is a desktop application written in C++, using Qt and OpenGL. I continued to support select customers by developing data tracking and summary information for the X-ray crystallography program CrystalClear. This included a web app to review the data and display the molecules written in JavaScript, php, and WebGL. Rigaku’s “strategic software initiative” was organized by the owner of the company to developed applications for protein crystallography and other x-ray based instruments and provided tools for developments in Houston and Japan. At the peak of this effort the group was about 10 people in Utah valley who collaborated closely with the Japanese programming groups and scientists in Houston. In addition to my management responsibilities I have also done lots of hands on programming. This included developing support tools and graphic applications such as molecular viewers, reciprocal lattice viewers and reciprocal space viewers. Recently I have been encouraging Rigaku to develop mobile apps and wrote a simple demo app for the iPad in Objective C to illustrate the possibilities. Most of my recent projects have been done with Qt. Until recently I was doing some contract work for Rigaku to finish of the last project I was working on, but that work is now ending. Show less

I had become involved with protein crystallography during graduate school and picked up this interest again when I joined Biosym which was a molecular modeling company. I started with Biosym when it was under 10 people and was involved in the development and eventual sale of the company to Corning when we were about 350 people. In addition to management I developed user interface and graphics tools. Evans and Sutherland; I worked in an R&D group developing CAD/CAM applications and support hardware. I spent on year in Cambridge England as the liaison to ShapeData, a solid modeling company that E&S had purchased. I started working with Dr. Allen Edmundson’s crystallography group in grad school and developed an interactive fitting program for them that was used to solve many protein structures during that time. I had always thought I wanted to be an academic. I taught data structure and graphics classes but soon tired of academic politics and lack of resources. During graduate school I worked extensively with a mine in northern Ontario. We used what was then state of the art computer graphics equipment to model the ore body and design excavations (as solid 3D models). My thesis was partially based on this consulting work.
