I had a really nice and pleasant experience during my first year placement at A1 ward (Cardiology and HCOP). Within my 6weeks experience I was able to recognise the daily routine of the ward such as assisting with personal care for patients, feeding, bed making and lots more I was able to check blood sugar level on patient, recognise the normal value, escalate when the value is high and to perform a ketone test. I was able to recognise patients with dietary requirement such as diabetics, vegans and patient on levelled diet (patients with digestion difficulty) I was able to take clinical observation, understand its importance and recognise when to escalate based on the vital signs values. I was able to assist patients with toileting while maintaining privacy and respecting patient's dignity. I was able to recognise, observe/assess skin and its stage/category. I was able to provide appropriate assistance for patient with washing, bathing, dressing and making beds ensuring that the patient's privacy is maintained. I was able to recognise dehydration in patient, monitor and record fluid intake and output and analyse urine. I was able to assist patient with mobility and hearing difficulty with their aids. I learnt the basic medications on the ward, allergies, calculation, importance, routes and the Rs of patient. Also, the use of BNF or other medication software (Medusa in the case of A1 ward). I was able to fully understand the importance of record keeping and documentation. I worked collaboratively with staffs, healthcare support workers, specialist nurses and other member of the multidisciplinary teams. Above all, I was able to learn the importance of providing a compassionate care to patient. Although this is my first placement, I am hoping to improve on my personal and professional skills moving forward while gaining more experience and confidence. Show less
