In the early morning of Tuesday, July 21, 2020, the MV Wakashio, a sizable Japanese iron ore cargo ship, collided with the coral reefs of Mauritius, resulting in a devastating oil spill that remains the island's worst environmental disaster to date. In response to this urgent situation, Sotravic, operating under the newly established company Frontier, swiftly mobilized its resources and assembled a team of dedicated professionals to aid in the ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of the oil spill. As a member of the response team, my primary responsibility was overseeing the on-shore activities aimed at minimizing the ecological damage caused by the spill. Some of my key contributions in this crucial role included: • Conduct drone surveys along the contaminated coastline and offshore areas, followed by meticulous mapping of the affected regions to provide accurate data and insights for the team. • Taking charge of organizing, planning, and deploying our available resources in alignment with the survey findings. This involved coordinating tankers for efficient oil pumping from the shore, meticulously organizing and managing a team of over 50 individuals for effective beach clean-up, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards through the provision of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and equipment. • Overseeing the removal of oil-saturated booms from the sea and facilitating the proper transportation and disposal of the collected waste to designated hazardous waste facilities. • Maintaining detailed reports and diligently tracking daily progress toward achieving our targets, ensuring effective communication within the response team, and providing valuable updates to project stakeholders. This experience has reinforced my commitment to environmental preservation and highlighted the importance of swift and well-coordinated action in the face of environmental emergencies. Show less

During my time at Veolia, we pioneered innovative solutions to optimize landfill operations and harness the potential of waste as a resource. Our commitment to maximizing efficiency and adhering to the highest environmental standards led us to implement various effective measures, including landfill liner installation, leachate management systems, landfill gas management strategies, surface and groundwater management protocols, and comprehensive environmental monitoring systems. In addition, we established an onsite landfill gas treatment facility, effectively converting landfill gas into valuable energy, thereby diversifying Hong Kong's energy sources. In this transformative endeavor, I played a key role in ensuring smooth operations and driving continuous improvement. Some of my key responsibilities included: • Supervising construction activities, and overseeing the execution of projects in alignment with regulatory standards and project requirements. • Monitoring the temperature inside the landfill to address the concern of a potential deep-seated fire at SENT. This involved employing infrared thermal cameras to survey surface temperature and conducting visual inspections. • Implementing strategic measures such as liquid nitrogen injection at specific locations to reduce site temperature and mitigate potential risks. • Capturing and analyzing data pertaining to landfill operations, temperature monitoring, and overall performance, compiling comprehensive reports on a weekly basis for review by my supervisor. By actively contributing to Veolia's waste management and resource recovery efforts, I have developed a profound understanding of the operational intricacies involved in landfill management, environmental monitoring, and sustainable energy generation.
